Mazda 6 (12 - present)

The Mazda 6 has never been given proper credit. Without doubt it is one of the most underrated cars on the road. In a segment where the likes of the Volkswagen Passat, the Hyundai i40, and Ford Mondeo sell well, the 6 has never quite piled on sales. However, this is a car now that can rival any of them – and even nibble at the likes of the BMW 3-series. It looks and drives really well. It also uses the SkyActiv technology which means it is larger, more economical, lighter, and a much better performer than the previous one. It also uses a new brake energy renewal system called i-ELOOP. It stores any electricity created during braking to power things such as electric windows, radio, climate control, and headlights. The interior is roomy, with lots of leg/head room for the driver and passengers. And there is a large boot. There is plenty of standard equipment and loads of safety elements. On the road, the ‘6’ handles really well. The level of comfort puts it in the top echelon of the large-family/fleet segment and the way it handles ensures it will tempt a lot of people.

Look out for

•  There was a recall in early 2013 due to electrical niggles

What we like

•  It’s an efficient car and great on fuel

•  Includes the SkyActiv and i-ELOOP technology

•  Great to drive, quiet, refined, and comfortable on the move

•  Generous level of standard kit and safety features

What we don't like

•  Visibility through the rear window is disappointing
