Vauxhall Astra (10 - present)

The Astra is one of the most underrated cars on the road but Irish buyers have always rated it. The saloon in particular is one of the best-looking and sturdiest cars around and popular here. All versions look much better than the previous model and there has been a huge improvement in the cabin. There is more passenger room and, certainly in the saloon, there is a lot of luggage space. Leg and head room in the rear seats have also been improved making it a viable option for a family of five. There’s a high level of standard kit and safety features. On the road, the Astra is far more dynamic than it is given credit for. It handles really well and there is a solid, well-planted feel to the chassis. Even things like the gear shift have been improved to feel more positive and precise. There are plenty of engines to choose from; each quite efficient.

Look out for

•  There were some reported faults with the electric power steering

What we like

•  It is comfortable and refined

•  The ride quality is impressive

•  Interior design is classy and contemporary

•  Efficient in terms of Co2 emissions and fuel economy

What we don't like

•  Wind noise in the cabin can get annoying
